👑 It’s Not Just About Beauty

By Callie Joy – Miss Jr. Teen Lone Star State

When I tell people I do pageants, a lot of them assume it’s all about hair, makeup, and being pretty on stage. But honestly, that’s the smallest part of it. What people don’t see is all the hard work behind the scenes—and trust me, there’s a lot.

I’ve been doing pageants for a few years now, and what I’ve learned goes way beyond crowns and dresses. Pageants have taught me discipline, like how to juggle school, sports, appearances, and still somehow make time to prep for interviews and practice walking in heels without falling (which was not easy at first). It’s pushed me to grow up a little faster in a good way.

I also run a lemonade stand that I started when I was 8 years old. I don’t just set it up for fun—I work hard, I hustle, and I use that money to pay for about 90% of my pageant costs. From outfits to entry fees to hotel stays, I do what it takes to make it happen. I’m super thankful my mom helps cover the rest—she’s basically the MVP behind the scenes—but I take a lot of pride in paying my own way. It’s made me appreciate every opportunity even more.

Another big thing pageants have taught me is confidence. And I don’t mean fake confidence where you just smile and pretend. I mean real confidence—like learning how to answer tough questions in interviews or speak in front of a room full of people without panicking. I used to get nervous, and sometimes I still do, but I’ve learned how to push through it. That’s going to help me no matter what I do in life.

I’ve also learned how to lose without falling apart. Not every pageant ends with a crown, and that’s okay. I’ve learned how to be happy for other girls, clap with a genuine heart, and keep working on myself. That’s a life skill—not just a pageant one.

All of this has prepared me for real life. Whether I go into marine biology, ministry, or something totally different, I already know how to set goals, stay focused, and talk to adults with confidence. Not every 14-year-old can say that, and honestly, I’ve got pageants (and lemonade) to thank for it.

So yeah, there’s beauty in pageantry. But it’s not just about looks. It’s about learning, growing, and becoming the kind of young woman who’s not afraid to work hard for her dreams—and have fun while doing it.
