The Prosecutor Who Saved My Life ⚖️

By Delenia King – Mrs. Georgia Regency International

People often ask me why I became an attorney.

They expect to hear about a lifelong dream, a passion for the law, or an inspiring mentor. While those things are wonderful, my journey to the legal profession began somewhere much darker.

It began with surviving domestic violence.

Surviving as a Mother

When I was living through the abuse, I wasn't just trying to survive for myself—I was a young mother raising two children.

Every decision I made carried the weight of protecting them while trying to find a way to protect myself. That added a layer of complexity that many people don't see.

Leaving an abusive relationship is never as simple as walking away. When children are involved, every choice is clouded by fear, financial uncertainty, concerns for their safety, and the hope that somehow things might change.

Like so many survivors, I questioned my own worth, blamed myself, and wondered whether anyone would believe me.

The emotional and psychological grip of abuse is difficult to explain to someone who has never experienced it. Abuse strips away your confidence long before it leaves visible scars.

When Someone Else Fought for Me ⚖️

When my case entered the criminal justice system, I wasn't strong enough to stand up to my abuser.

I was terrified. I wasn't ready to fight.

But someone fought for me.

A prosecutor saw beyond my silence. She recognized that my fear wasn't weakness—it was trauma.

She understood that victims often need someone willing to carry the burden until they are able to stand on their own. She pursued justice even when I was too afraid to ask for it.

Her advocacy saved my life.

A Promise That Changed My Future

She may never fully know the impact she had on my future, but because of her, I learned what true advocacy looks like.

I witnessed the extraordinary responsibility attorneys have to speak for those whose voices have been silenced.

That experience changed the trajectory of my life.

I made a promise to myself that if I survived, I would dedicate my life to helping others find safety, justice, and hope.

That promise led me to law school. It led me to become an attorney. It led me to serve as a prosecutor, where I had the privilege of standing beside victims during some of the darkest moments of their lives.

From Survivor to Attorney and Advocate 💜

Today, my legal career remains rooted in advocacy.

Whether I am representing a client or simply listening to someone's story, I want every person to know they are seen, heard, and worthy of justice.

As the reigning Mrs. Georgia Regency International, my platform is domestic violence awareness and survivor empowerment. This title has given me the opportunity to share a story that I once believed I had to keep hidden.

For years, I thought surviving abuse was something to be ashamed of.

Now I know it is the very foundation of my purpose.

Turning Pain Into Purpose 🙏

I am no longer defined by what happened to me. Instead, I am defined by what God has done through me.

He took my deepest pain and transformed it into a calling to serve others.

Every courtroom I enter, every survivor I encourage, and every opportunity I have to speak about domestic violence is a reminder that healing is possible and that purpose can be born from unimaginable hardship.

To Every Survivor Reading This

To every survivor reading this, especially the mothers carrying the weight of protecting their children while trying to survive themselves:

I see you.

Your fear is real. Your circumstances are difficult. But they do not have the final word over your life.

There is hope.

There is healing.

There is justice.

Someone once believed in me before I could believe in myself.

Now, it is my life's mission to be that person for someone else. ⚖️💜
